As You Like It

‘All the world’s a stage…’

We couldn’t have asked for better weather to kick off the Globe Theatre’s historic debut performance in Ireland. In fact, with one of the sunniest stretches we’ve had all year in Kilkenny, you couldn’t ask for a better day to kick off the 39th Kilkenny Arts Festival!

And what a perfect night for seeing William Shakespeare’s classic comedy As You Like It in an outdoor setting. The Castle Yard looked magnificent in the evening sun as the audience filed in shortly before 7.30pm. The buzz in the air was palpable as a capacity crowd sat down to witness one of the biggest theatrical events ever seen in Kilkenny.

The show itself was typically faultless, with the multi talented singing, dancing, fighting, romancing thespians making great use of the location to spill off the set and into the Castle Yard and its environs whenever possible. The fit up style set worked perfectly in the setting and provided a huge box of magic tricks for the players to perform from.

The reaction to the show afterwards was fantastic and there’s definitely a huge level of excitement about the next week of performances. Make no mistake, this event is a once in a lifetime theatrical experience. If you have tickets for the coming performances, you’re in for a treat. And if not, you should treat yourself as soon as possible!

As lovely as our photos are, there’s nothing that beats the experience of being there watching one of the best theatrical troupes in the world weave their magic in front of your eyes.

‘Oh! how bitter a thing it is to look into happiness through another man's eyes.’
