Dido & Aeneas Storms Kilkenny

August 17, 2012

As stormy weather rained on us last night, the Watergate Theatre filled up with a capacity audience for one of the most highly anticipated events of this years programme.

The production of Dido & Aeneas by Cork Opera House takes the 1689 Baroque work based on Virgil’s tragedy and gives it a stunning new arrangement. The results are spectacular with the work being transformed into a sexed up, steam punk slice of Gothic opera. The arrangement had hints of jazz, tango and gypsy music and created a wonderful mixed bag of styles that contributed to a musical treat for the ears.

The production design was gorgeous and every single aspect of this show seemed as it came from another world fully formed. It was a major treat for opera fans and as an introduction for newcomers to opera, it’s a perfect first port of call.

As you can see from the photos, it was absolutely spectacular and gave everybody in attendance good reason to forget about all the stormy weather outside.
