Ivo Papasov and his Bulgarian Wedding Band
Every year at the festival there always seems to be that mid week slice of world music that gets everyone insanely excited and results in bouts of extreme dancing. Last year it was Hanggai from China and this year we welcomed Ivo Papasov from Bulgaria. And yes, once again, there was some extreme dancing.
Wedding dancing to be precise! Specialising in making shows that are the wedding reception you’ve always dreamed of, Papasov is a BBC World Music Award winning clarinetist with a band honed over the past 4 decades. And it shows! They are watertight in their playing and a capacity house was there to watch them. Their energy is relentless and they didn’t let up for the entirety of the first half of the gig in Set Theatre last night. The crowd (as is usually the case in Kilkenny) took a little time to warm up but when they did, they filled the dance floor with gusto.
There was no break between songs in the first half and no let up from Papasov’s band. When eventually a break came, much to the relief of the no doubt sore footed audience, Papasov used his limited English to tell the crowd that he was ‘going to get some beer.’ Everyone, band included, stocked up at the bar, readying themselves for round two. After the interval the band busted straight back into the music and the dance floor filled once more. This mid week tradition of extreme dancing in Kilkenny Arts Festival continues apace and well, have a watch for yourselves!
