Preview: The Arts Are A Luxury We Can’t Afford Right Now!
Should a government be responsible for funding the arts when it has to borrow to pay the wages of doctors, teachers and the Gardai?
Can a country afford to spend millions to keep pieces of art in the country when hundreds of thousands are unemployed?
Those and other questions will be passionately debated when a panel of key stakeholders from both sides of the argument meet in The Pembroke Hotel on Saturday, August 6 at 11.30am.
Entry is free.
The panel, brought to you by the Carlow and Kilkenny National Campaign for the Arts, will include Gerry Smyth (poet and editor of the Irish Times arts coverage), Grainne Miller (Head of Cultural Development at the Temple Bar Cultural Trust) and Finbar Bradley (Economist and former Professor of Finance at DCU). The discussion will be chaired by Pat Cooke (Director of MA Cultural Policy and Arts Management at UCD).
The panel will also be taking invited inputs from the floor.
It's sure to be a lively discussion and one not to be missed.
