Foot Washing for the Sole

Adrian Howells (UK)

IRISH PREMIERE

Live artist Adrian Howells brings to Kilkenny an award-winning performance which offers to restore a sense of peace to our headlong, frantic lives.

Breaking down the barriers between performer and audience, Adrian tenderly and lovingly washes, oils and finally massages the participant’s feet in a one-to-one encounter that is at once beautiful, comforting, thought-provoking and filled with humility. Through a gesture that resonates with particular significance across all societies, he helps – via our two main points of contact – quite literally to reconnect us with the world.

Partially inspired by his recognition of how the three major religions of Christianity, Islam and Judaism tend to betray their spiritual values, Foot Washing for the Sole is an intensely personal and moving interaction, which forces us to address our own spirituality, culture and faith.

Adrian Howells is a live artist creating work that promotes intimacy and genuine exchange with an audience, often in an autobiographical or confessional context and often presented in non-traditional performance spaces. Foot Washing for the Sole has been performed all over the world and won a Total Theatre Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year.
