The sublime Justin Kauflin and his late night concert. August 2016.
Never mind ' Marty in the Morning.' Driving down from Dublin to Kilkenny at 9 am on this first day of the 2017 Festival, I chose to listen to the CD I bought last year at Justin's brilliant late night concert.
The SET Theatre was a complete revelation to me, and, nestling discreetly behind the courtyard at Langton's Hotel, I loved it at first sight. As a stage designer for more years than I care to remember, not all theatres are immediately lovable believe me. It brought to mind all those faded photographs of the cabaret venues in Paris and Berlin in the 1920's.
The first five days of this year's festival features three fascinating and varied late night shows at the SET. On Saturday, at 9.30, the bizarrely named LEMON BUCKET ORKESTRA will be performing ( who will be strutting their stuff at the HUB from Sunday in COUNTING SHEEP ). On Sunday at 9pm - SAINT SISTER ( who I first heard of when a friend who programmes OTHER VOICES suggested I might care for them - and I did ! ) will be in concert. On Tuesday at 10pm EDGES of LIGHT with three esteemed musicians and Colin Dunne promises to be a fascinating cross polination of disciplines. I canot wait to see all three shows and be in this atmospheric venue again.
