Billy Byrnes is a family run tradional Irish bar that first opened in 1954. Situated at the top of John St near the bus/train station, it has hosted a wide range of music events throughout the years from Mixtapes from the Underground and the amazing Josh T Pearson in 2012 to Fight Like Apes last year. It is home to the legendary Sofa Sesssions, a weekly series of contemporary music, curated by Kilkenny musician and Irish Times music critic Cormac Larkin. The Sofa Sessions has hosted major stars of jazz including Swedish trumpeter Anders Bergcrantz, English vocalist Norma Winstone and ex-Jazz Messengers saxophonist Jean Toussaint.
Billy Byrnes is fully wheelchair accessible.
There is a public carpark to the rear of Billy Byrnes, accessible via John's Green. Two minutes walk to venue.
