Over the years many Malian artists have graced our Festival stages, but few with the stature of Oumou Sangaré. Since her debut album Moussoulou in 1989, Sangaré has become a global superstar and feminist icon, celebrated for making some of the most definitive albums in the history of contemporary African music.
Her latest album, Timbuktu, is her ‘boldest and most ambitious album to date’ (Uncut), effortlessly melding the hypnotic rhythms of her native Wassoulou region with Afro-pop, folk-rock and fuzzy blues guitars, all carried by her extraordinary voice. Backed by a seven-piece band, Sangaré’s appearance in St Canice’s is surely one of this year’s must-see gigs.
