Opera Collective Ireland & Kilkenny Arts Festival present

We’re delighted to present online one of the highlights of recent festivals: Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses, free to stream here for a limited period. 

Filmed at the Watergate Theatre in 2018, this production was the first ever staging in Ireland of Monteverdi’s operatic masterpiece. It was directed by Tony Award-winning Patrick Mason and featured one of the world’s most acclaimed early music ensembles, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, conducted by Christian Curnyn. 

Based on Homer’s epic tale, The Return of Ulysses is set ten years after the fall of Troy. While the hero Ulysses makes his way home, in Ithaca his wife Penelope waits faithfully, hoping against hope that he may still be alive. But the suitors are circling…

Available from Friday 7 at 7pm to Sunday 16 August, this filmed version is a unique opportunity to experience – or relive – that memorable performance.
