The idea of playing electronic music on wooden instruments might seem bizarre, but it was while working with Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood that string quintet Wooden Elephant was inspired to do just that. The result was a groundbreaking performance of Björk’s album Homogenic that combined traditional string instruments with everything from wine glasses to kitchen foil. Since then, Wooden Elephant (which features award-winning violinist Aoife Ní Bhriain) has expanded its repertoire to embrace other seminal pop albums, and for this performance in the Set the quintet performs two of its favourite albums in their entirety – Homogenic and Radiohead’s masterpiece Kid A. These dazzling interpretations match the restless innovation of the original works and sound at once familiar and utterly new.
