This year’s Festival is rich with musicians whose work crosses the boundaries of genre, but Kyle Sanna might be the most versatile of all. The Brooklyn-based composer’s work embraces everything from contemporary composition to jazz and improvisation, Irish traditional music and technology.
In this exhilarating blend of live and recorded music, Sanna performs tracks from his recent album of contemporary classical music, Everything Again Is New. But rather than treating the original compositions as fixed, he uses live coding to improvise in real time, causing musical phrases and motifs to fracture and recombine in ways that blur the line between composition and performance. He’s joined by artist in residence (and fellow visionary) Kate Ellis, who plays both composed and improvised parts, while projections enable the audience to witness the creative process itself.
Don’t miss this cutting-edge blend of old and new, where contemporary music meets electronica, and coding meets the improvisational energies of jazz.
