Last year, Francesco Turrisi’s first residency at the Festival featured a series of sell-out concerts exploring everything from chamber music to jazz. This year we’re delighted to welcome back the Grammy Award-winning polymath as artist in residence, presiding over (and performing in) a fresh series of concerts featuring leading musicians in a breathtaking range of genres.
Named after al-Idrisi, a celebrated Muslim cartographer whose work transcended borders, the Idrîsî Ensemble is dedicated to transforming the ways in which we hear the music of the medieval troubadours. In Trobairitz Compass, members of the ensemble join Turrisi and composer-violinist Layale Chaker for a new project that weaves together Arabic, Syriac, Greek, Occitan, Andalusian and Corsican traditions.
At its heart are the Trobairitz, the women troubadours of medieval Occitania, whose voices moved between poetry, politics, devotion and desire. Inspired by al-Idrisi, Trobairitz Compass imagines the Mediterranean not as a border, but as a place where languages, faiths and sonic worlds converge to thrilling effect.
