Whether performing as a classical violinist or a fiddle player, the genre-hopping Aoife Ní Bhriain has appeared at the Festival many times in recent years, playing everything from Bach to Tommy Potts and collaborating with like-minded artists including pianist Cormac McCarthy, harpist Catrin Finch and dancer Colin Dunne.
For this solo outing Ní Bhriain explores the fantasy and folk influences of some of the most prolific composers for solo violin. From the Alia Fantasia composed by Nicola Matteis in 1720 to the fjords of Bjarne Brustad’s Fairytale Suite, as well as pieces by Eugène Ysaÿe, George Enescu and a jig (or gigue!) or two, Ní Bhriain showcases the role that folk music has played in these composers’ best works.
