The Romans called Ireland Hibernia, the ‘land of winter’, and the unique qualities of Irish light inspired this major new work from Donnacha Dennehy, composer and cofounder of Crash Ensemble.
A celebration of cyclical time, rich with overlapping sounds, colours and rhythms, Land of Winter unfolds across 12 movements or ‘months’ exploring the interplay between light and time, from the short days of winter, with their grey skies and glancing sunlight, to the summer months when brightness lingers almost till midnight.
Conceived on a trip to Iceland, Dennehy’s Grammy-winning tone poem to his homeland is both ‘a celebration of recurring time and also something written in fear of linear time with its progress towards death’. A haunting phrase from Samuel Beckett remains an inspiration to Dennehy: ‘Thirty thousand nights. Hard to believe so few.’
